Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica

I have visited Costa Rica many times and while most people prefer the west coast, I definately prefer the Caribbean side of Costa Rica.  And Puerto Viejo is my SECOND favorite spot next to Cahuita, just a few miles north of here.

Puerto Viejo is the second largest town on the east coast but you still have to travel several miles on gravel road to get here.  It’s well maintained so despite what everyone says, you really don’t need a 4WD.  Seems that the only people driving 4WDs are the tourist in rental cars.

On the southern caribbean side, this is where you come for a great night life with tons of amazing restaurants and clubs.  Seafood is, of course, increadible here.  But be sure to try any of the sodas (tiny little cafes) for some great suprises at very little cost ($5 for a full meal).

When I stay in Puerto Viejo, I usually stay at Hotel Yare, http://www.hotelyare.com/ for nice and inexpensive accomodations.  I usually don’t reserve a place when I visit and at times, got a room for $20 a night when it’s not crowded.  And this includes a great breakfast in the morning.

You can get here in 2 basic ways from San Jose.  Rent a car or take the bus (really cheap).  I keep wanting to save the cost of a rental but I just love driving all over the place in the area.  I really rack up the miles.  And again, you don’t HAVE to rent a 4WD, but it is more comfortable… at least for me.
